About Fort Harrison Chapter, NSDAR

Chapter History

The Fort Harrison Chapter, NSDAR, was organized on April 8, 1909, with 41 members. The chapter name was chosen in memory of the 1811 fort located on the eastern banks of the Wabash river, two miles north of the Indian village of Rising Sun (Orchardtown) in the Indiana Territory. The fort was named Fort Harrison after General William Henry Harrison, then governor.

Fort Harrison served as both a garrison and a meeting place for Indian-U.S. treaties. After 1822 the fort ceased serving as a military post and became a boarding house for early settlers and those traveling via the Wabash river. While the fort no longer stands, a commemorative sign is located at the site and some of the wood from the structure is immortalized in the chapter gavel.
